The Rxperts Conference & Expo, held July 14-18 at the Hilton Austin Downtown, was an overwhelming success. Nine hundred and eight-two pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, students and industry representatives met for four days to hear national-caliber speakers, visit 90+ exhibitors and enjoy live music and fun-packed social events.
The conference began on Wednesday with preconference seminars and the Daryl Spence Classic PharmPAC Golf Tournament & Dinner.
At the Opening General Session on Thursday, national healthy policy analyst Emily Friedman discussed reform, revolution, and the future of pharmacy. At the Advocacy Luncheon, State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, R.Ph., and State Rep. Chuck Hopson, R.Ph., discussed the importance of advocacy and their experiences as pharmacist legislators. The day concluded with the hot sounds of local band Skyrocket, dancing and lots of food at the Rxperts Kickoff Bash.
Friday morning attendees enjoyed breakfast in the Expo hall before checking out the 90+ exhibitors during a four-hour dedicated timeslot. At the Awards Luncheon later that day, pharmacy activist Gwen Olsen spoke after award winners were honored for their outstanding service to the pharmacy profession. In an impassioned presentation, Olsen challenged her audience to be proactive and to use critical intelligence where prescription drug use is concerned. After a second day packed with CE, the more adventurous showcased their vocal talents at a karaoke and dessert part at Maggie Mae’s on 6th Street.
The education conference ended Saturday with the Closing General Session and inspirational social change agent Kevin Carroll, who challenged his audience to embrace their sense of play and creativity. The leadership conference began Saturday afternoon with academy, local association, and reference committee meetings.
The conference concluded Sunday with the House of Delegates meeting and Closing Leadership Luncheon with a performance by Doc Blakely, rancher, humorist and musician.
The 2011 Conference & Expo will be held June 22-26 at the Fort Worth Omni Hotel and the Fort Worth Convention Center.
